What is Osteogenesis Imperfecta?

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), also known as brittle bone disease, is a genetic disorder characterized by bones that break easily, often with little or no apparent cause. This condition arises from a genetic mutation that affects the body's production of collagen, a key protein that helps to strengthen bones. As a result, individuals with OI can experience fractures from activities that would not typically cause injury.

Symptoms of OI can range from mild to severe and may include a tendency for bones to fracture easily, bone deformity, short stature, loose joints, muscle weakness, and in some cases, hearing loss, dental problems, and a blue or gray tint to the whites of the eyes. The severity and specific symptoms can vary greatly from person to person.
